Stephen was born and raised in Regina. As an undergraduate, Stephen attended both the University of Saskatchewan and Acadia University, where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in 1994. Stephen then returned to the University of Saskatchewan in 1997 to study law and he obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1999. Stephen was called to the Bar in Saskatchewan in 2000.
Stephen articled with Gerrand Rath Johnson and worked as an Associate lawyer until 2003. While at Gerrand Rath Johnson, Stephen practiced mainly in the areas of Civil Litigation and Family Law. In 2003, Stephen took a position with Saskatchewan Government Insurance as in-house litigation counsel where he acted as defence counsel on Civil Litigation matters and appeals to the Automobile Injury Appeal Commission.
In 2007, Stephen moved to Saskatchewan Lawyers' Insurance Association Inc., where he acted as defence counsel on behalf of the lawyers of Saskatchewan involving negligence claims. He was also the Insurance Director and, in that capacity, oversaw the entire operation of the insurance program. As Insurance Director, Stephen participated in the national insurance program, Canadian Lawyers Insurance Association.
In 2013, Stephen returned to private practice with Gerrand Rath Johnson LLP.
Stephen's litigation practice focuses primarily on insurance defence work with emphasis on professional negligence and personal injury; as well as liability under commercial general liability policies and insurance coverage disputes. Stephen also acts on behalf of both Plaintiffs and Defendants in all types of civil disputes, including matters involving class actions, personal injury, automobile accidents and benefits, contract and commercial disputes, construction liability, builders’ liens, debt enforcement and foreclosures.
Stephen also practices in family law including divorce, child and spousal support, child access and custody, "common law" spousal relationships, family property division, separation and pre-nuptial agreements,
Stephen has appeared before all levels of court in Saskatchewan at the trial and appellate levels.
Stephen is currently a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Regina Bar Association and the Saskatchewan Trial Lawyers' Association. Stephen was the President of the Regina Bar Association in 2004.
Stephen has been a presenter at the CPLED course for many years and has also presented at several other legal education seminars.
Stephen is a current board member for Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers and Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan. He is a past board member of the YMCA.
Stephen is a coach in Regina Community Basketball Association and has helped coach in the Regina Soccer Association.
He and his wife Susan are the proud parents of two wonderful boys.
